Hierarchical and distributed optimization of smart grids (+video)

Abstract

The continued growth and promotion of Renewable Energy Systems (RESs) as a sustainable replacement for diminishing and carbon-intensive fossils fuels for electricity generation is a key priority for the European Union in creating competitive low-carbon economy, as set-out under the EU Renewable Energy Directive and subsequent National Renewable energy action plans. The proposed research activity aims at defining EMSs
(Energy Management Systems) for a district/city that includes renewables, distributed generation, electrical vehicles, storage systems, electrical and thermal distribution networks, manufacturing factories and buildings that can apply demand response programs. The developed EMSs are applied to a real case-study: the University of Genoa Smart Polygeneration Microgrid (SPM) at the Savona Campus.
