Abstract

A reliable and accurate indoor localization system has the potential to transform the concept of navigation inside a building in a similar way that Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) transformed the way people navigate outdoors. Indoor positioning capabilities may provide important benefits: • in safety critical situation, such as in law enforcement, rescue services, and fire services; • in healthcare applications, where the tracking of medical staff and patients may be crucial; • in residential scenarios, such as in a smart house to enhance energy savings and to personalize entertainment systems. The aim of our research is to investigate how Received Signal Strength (RSS) based localization can be performed in an easy way by exploiting common Internet of Things (IoT) communication networks, which could easily integrate with already existing networks.
